BJP Leader Vishal Jolly Raises Key Issues with Chief Secretary-Andaman and Nicobar Administration

BJP Leader Vishal Jolly Raises Key Issues with Chief Secretary-Andaman and Nicobar Administration

In a significant meeting held today, Shri Vishal Jolly, a member of the National Executive Committee and National Council of the BJP, met with the Chief Secretary of Andaman and Nicobar Administration to highlight & discuss several pressing issues affecting the region. During the meeting, Jolly highlighted three critical concerns that require immediate attention from the administration.

Issue 1: Chatam Bridge Accessibility

Shri. Vishal Jolly pointed out the challenges faced by pregnant women, children, and handicapped persons, due to restrictions imposed on the Chatam Bridge because of its dilapidated condition. He suggested for operating battery cars for the time being to transport these groups between Chatham Jetty and the Chatham Police Station junction, to alleviate their struggles. This may be done after due consultation with experts of this field. He further requested to take up, discuss & explore the possibility of reinforcing the existing bridge temporarily as a stop gap arrangement, with Engineering Experts, till a new bridge comes into existence.

Issue 2: Power Supply and Hydro Power Generation

The second issue raised was the frequent power cuts plaguing the islands, which are severely impacting the public, business community, and students. Jolly emphasized the need for drastic measures to address this issue. He also highlighted the underperformance of the hydro power generation project at Diglipur on the Kalpong River, suggesting a thorough overhaul to improve its efficiency.

Issue 3: National Highway Condition

The third issue concerned the poor condition of National Highway 4, which connects South Andaman with North and Middle Andaman. Spanning approximately 300 kilometers, the highway’s poor state is a significant concern. Although the Chief Secretary indicated that completing the project would take some time, he assured that steps are being taken to make the highway motorable.

The meeting was positive and fruitful, with the Chief Secretary showing willingness to address all these critical issues.

MP raises demand for creation of basic facilities at North Bay Tourist Destination

PRESS RELEASE
(15.07.2025)

MP raises demand for creation of basic facilities at North Bay Tourist Destination

Shri Bishnu Pada Ray, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Andaman & Nicobar Islands, has called upon the A&N Administration to immediately provide essential facilities at the North Bay tourist destination, following his visit to the area on 8th July 2025.

In a letter addressed to the Chief Secretary, A&N Administration, the Hon’ble MP pointed out that since the inauguration of the newly constructed sea shore road connecting Chunna Bhatta to North Bay on 30th April 2025, there has been a noticeable rise in tourist footfall including both islanders and mainland visitors. The scenic drive has not only enhanced the natural appeal of the area but also opened avenues of livelihood for local youths and Self-Help Groups through petty shops and tourism-linked activities.

However, during his visit, several grievances were raised by tourists and local vendors about the lack of basic facilities at the site, which are impacting both tourism and local business activities. The Hon’ble MP has highlighted the following pressing issues:
1. Drinking Water: There is no provision of safe drinking water or water pipelines at North Bay. Tourists are compelled to buy bottled water at high prices. The MP has urged the APWD to address this at the earliest.
2. Electricity Supply: The absence of electricity and proper power connections is causing inconvenience, particularly in the evening. The MP has requested the Electricity Department to ensure immediate electrification of the area.
3. Public Transportation: Currently, no government transport service operates between Bambooflat and North Bay. Only private operators ply the route, often charging exorbitant fares. The MP has recommended that STS introduce at least three daily trips at 9:30 AM, 12:00 Noon, and 6:00 PM to support both tourists and daily commuters.
4. Public Toilets: A lack of toilet facilities is leading to open defecation, which is inappropriate for any tourist destination. The MP has requested the Department of Tourism to install at least three pre-fabricated toilet blocks each for men and women, on a “pay and use” basis to ensure cleanliness and maintenance.

Shri Bishnu Pada Ray emphasized that if these essential services are not made available, it could tarnish the reputation of North Bay as a prime tourist attraction of the Islands. He has forwarded his letter to the Chief Secretary with copies marked to the Chief Engineer (APWD), Superintending Engineer (Electricity), Director (Transport), and Director (Tourism) for urgent and coordinated action.
